Summer is here! The little birdies are singing, flowers are in full bloom and love is in the air.

And you can’t deny that this gorgeous weather is perfect for living out your very own cute rom com. Yep, that’s right… time for brunch, the farmer’s market, peddle boats and picnics in the park! Awwww yeah.

There’s a good chance, though, that you’ve never planned a romantic picnic, so you might be a bit clueless. Don’t risk looking unprepared in front of your boo – before you pick the perfect park and make sure your date is free, use our quick guide to make sure you’ve got everything you need.

Eats & Drinks

OK this one is pretty obvious, so we’re not going to waste any energy going into all the options you have. Just remember to keep it simple or you risk things going off the rails.

If you ask us, you really can’t go wrong with a bottle (or 2!) of wine/champagne, cheese, fresh fruit and a lovely crusty baguette. And it wouldn’t hurt to bring along your date’s favorite sweet treat for dessert.

It would be a real rookie mistake to forget to bring a blanket. You definitely don’t want your boo to get his/her nice date clothes all dirty by sitting on the grass. So be sure to bring along something to sit on.

Our vote is a parachute material blanket. They’re extremely light weight, fold down to fit into a tiny pouch, dry quickly and wash easily. So it’s no biggie if you spill a bit of bubbly. These blankets may not be quite as cozy as a fabric blanket but they’re a lot more practical and easy to carry around.

Picnic Set

Save yourself some time and energy by picking up a ready-to-go picnic set like the VaVino bag. This cleverly designed bag is the perfect size for a small picnic for two. Plus it comes with all the supplies you need: 2 plastic wine glasses, 2 cloth napkins, corkscrew, decorative wine cork, wooden cheese plate and knife.

Plus it’s insulated so it’ll keep two bottles of wine and nibbles cold for up to 18 hours. That means you won’t need to worry if your date involves a pre-picnic hike or any other activities.  And the VaVino is super durable, so you’ll have it for many years (and picnic dates) to come!

Comfort Extras

Nothing ruins a picnic date quicker than you or your date being uncomfortable. Think ahead and you’ll be sure to keep the romance vibes going. We’d recommend bringing…

*Sunscreen – Protecting your skin from the sun’s rays is always a good idea. This is especially important to bring along if your picnic is a surprise because your honey probably didn’t come prepared.

*Bug Spray – Mosquitoes buzzing in your ear and eating you alive is a surefire way to kill the mood. Don’t let it happen to you.

*Hand Wipes – I don’t know about you, but I’m big on clean hands both before and after eating. Your date might be too, so bring some handy wipes along just in case.

Although the park and picnic set up might be romantic enough, it never hurts to set the mood with some good tunes. Bring along a small Bluetooth speaker and come prepared with a special playlist of hand-picked songs. Or you could just steal ours on Spotify and pretend you made it yourself.

Pro Tip: Check twice to make sure the speaker is fully charged and successfully to your phone before you go.

You two might not feel like doing anything other than lounging, chatting and enjoying your picnic treats while you make googly eyes at each other across the blanket. But on the off chance that you want to mix it up, bring along a Frisbee and a newspaper that has a good crossword puzzle and you’ll be prepared for whatever mood strikes.

Boom! Picnic sorted.

It can be nerve-wracking to plan a date that requires you to do more than just make a restaurant reservation but it’s well worth the effort. In addition to being just plain fun for you both, it’s a great way to show your special someone that you care enough to put some effort into a unique date. Happy picnicking!
